Parents of handicapped persons
would often ask: “What will happen to our child after us?” This is where Baïtna
can contribute to society by assuring a decent life for these persons.
Baïtna has started a project to build its first house in Fanar (a
suburb north-east of Beirut) and establish a community where the caregivers live with mentally handicapped persons a life of
service and loving care which makes them witnesses in society for accepting
others no matter how different they may be. The project calls for a building
designed to accommodate four families composed of ten residents and four
caregivers each. Besides the living space, the building will include workshops,
physical exercise centre and other facilities.
Through the help and generosity of donors the
building project was started in September 2010. The concrete structure of the building
is now complete and we are in the process of building the internal walls and
undertaking the rough-in works for plumbing, electricity and air conditioning.
We are seeking funding from local and
international organizations and donors to complete our project. Our next step consists
of plastering the internal walls and stone cladding of external walls at an
estimated cost of US$ 180,000.
The UN General Assembly has adopted a Declaration on the Rights
of Mentally Retarded Persons on 20 December 1971 under reference A/RES/2856.
It states in essence that the mentally retarded person has, to the maximum
degree of feasibility, the same rights as other human beings in all respects,
such as medical care, economic security, community life, protection from exploitation, … It further states that the
mentally retarded “has a right to a qualified guardian when this is required to
protect his personal well-being and interests”.
